A Breakfast Adventure - Restaurant Review

A restaurant review I wrote for my Advanced Composition class:

A Breakfast Adventure: A Review of Dutch Country in Hanover, PA

Going out to eat is an adventure—especially when you go to a restaurant you have never experienced before. My adventure occurred over winter break when I met up with an old friend from high school for brunch. As someone who rarely eats breakfast at “normal” breakfast hours, I was in the mood for a delicious, homemade breakfast feast. I was running low on cash, so we had to pick a fairly inexpensive restaurant. My hometown, unfortunately, is not known for a great selection of restaurants. We chose a place I had heard positive feedback about and decided to start our adventure there.

Dutch Country, at first sight, looks like an old barn alongside the busy Baltimore Street road. After further research, I found out the barn was, not only, built in the 1930s but was also the only building around the area for several miles. The history proceeds the old building with the quality and freshness of the food served. When you first walk in, you seat yourself. This was a nice option, especially if there were louder parties you would rather not sit beside. The setting was casual with a country theme creating a “homey” atmosphere. The tables were blatant forms of easy advertisement with several businesses promoting their companies—some rather unappealing. Upon sitting down, a host greeted us and asked for our drink orders. Between waiting for our waters and our waitress to greet us, my friend and I pondered over the menu.

Browsing through the breakfast section of the menu, my stomach grumbled with hunger looking at all the delicious options. I am a big fan of Belgian waffles, so when I saw the choice of getting baked apples and whipped topping on top of my waffle, I knew right away my decision had been made. My friend, also in the mood for breakfast, decided on a piece of French toast and breakfast potatoes. I grew eager for my waffle and side of bacon to arrive. The waitress promptly greeted us and took our orders. Within no time, our meals came out looking absolutely delightful—the aroma itself made my stomach growl.

Since I order waffles at restaurants quite frequently, I tend to have a high standard of what I constitute a “good” waffle. With my first bite, I tasted the best combination of warm, cinnamon apples, mixed with the cool, creamy whipped topping, all on top of the perfectly sized waffle. I was more than satisfied with my selection. I quickly ate up the baked apples and whipped cream, so my waffle would not get soggy. Inevitably, it did get soggy towards the middle; however, with a little maple syrup, it tasted just as delicious. The side of bacon turned out a bit crispier and greasier than my taste, but the unique flavor was delicious enough that I had no complaints after finishing my meal.

After my first experience at Dutch Country, I had nothing but positive thoughts towards my meal and decided that I looked forward to my next adventure there. I highly recommend Dutch Country for a fairly cheap, delicious meal from a country-style kitchen. With its friendly and timely staff, Dutch Country will leave you with an unforgettable experience you and your stomach will not regret.
